Things to Do & Restaurant Recommendations
Here's a list of activities on the East End of Long Island. The Restaurant Recommendations are below.
South Fork Attractions
The Hamptons (Long Island's Low Rent District) are just across Gardiner's Bay fron Greenport. There are many attractions there. Those who like looking at (large) houses may enjoy driving or walking along the beach. Historic Sag Harbor is also worth a trip. You can get to the Hamptons by taking the North ferry from Downtown Greenport to Shelter Island and then following North Ferry Rd. to South Ferry Rd. and taking the South Ferry to the South Fork. We will put up more detailed directions and a suggested driving route in the coming days.
North Fork Attractions
Winery tours & Tastings
The North Fork is Long Island's wine country and wineries there abound. You'll get a chance to taste Long Island's wines at the wedding reception (which will be held at a vineyard), but you may want to check out some of the other local wineries and vineyards. Most of them are located along Rte. 25, which runs between Greenport and Riverhead. Most all of them are open all day on the weekends. Below are links to a few we suggest.
Bedell Cellars (open 11 to 5 every day for tastings)
Castello di Borghese (Open 11 to 5 every day for tastings)
Martha Clara (Open 11:30 to 5:30 every day for tastings)
Pindar (Open 11 to 6 every day for tastings)
Canoeing or kayaking
There are many wonderful places to canoe or kayak on the North Fork. Eagle's Neck Paddling Company rents canoes and kayaks. Eagle's Neck can rent you a boat and give you suggestions about where to paddle or can take you on a guided tour.
Hiking, Walking, Swimming, Fishing at Orient Beach State Park
Orient Beach State Park, located less than 15 minutes from Greenport offers numerous activities. More information is available at http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=50.
Golf
Long Island National (Riverhead)
Island's End (Greenport)
Waterpark
Splish Splash Long Island in Riverhead might be a perfect attraction for those of you bringing children.
Bike Rental
The Bike Stop in Greenport, NY, rents a variety of bikes that could be used to ride to Orient Point State Park or to tour Shelter Island. In the summer time, the bikes go quickly, so, if you think you might want to rent a bike, it might be worth calling now.
